Sorry Kids, the Met Gala is for Adults Only

Ah, the Met Gala. One of the biggest nights in fashion. A time where the world’s top celebrities get to show off their unqiue style on the red carpet just to raise money at this exhibition. The money goes towards the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute. Every year there is a new theme. This year's theme will be 'Camp: Notes on Fashion'. I always look forward to watching the Met Gala and looking at photos of the star's outfits, as their fashion reveals how they interpreted the theme. Throughout the years, celebrities have chosen to make statements within their clothing and that's what viewers love about the Met Gala, as it gives an opportunity for celebrities to think outside of the box and bring awareness to certain issues. No other fashion show can compare to this. Moreover, it is an honor and privilege to be a piece of this highly anticipated annual event. However, this year, that is not the case for everyone.

According to StyleCaster, Anna Wintour and her Met Gala crew have enforced a new age restriction. The event is no longer inviting celebrities under the age of 18 to attend the Met Gala because it is considered as “inappropriate” for them. So, what led the organizers and committee of the Met Gala to come to this conclusion? Is it because some of the fashion reveals too much skin? Last year, pictures from the popular event revealed youth celebrities promoting wild behavior. Guests were accused of underaged drinking or speculated that some were smoking in the bathrooms. Yet, majority of those accused or caught were way over the age of 18. Actress Elle Fanning (19), was said to have drank white wine at the 2018 Met Gala based upon the photo that was taken. This one photo caused controversy for the actress. But, we can’t confirm whether this was true or not. Elle’s representative stated that she did not drink and only touched her glass to join in the toast. I mean, do you really think she would drink when she is aware of her own age?

Although teenagers never make the right choices, I think that celebrities within the teen age, are smart enough to not behave badly. They are aware that cameras and media are around and inescapable, so why would they do something, knowing that it could possibly ruin their reputation and status? I feel bad for rising stars such as Millie Bobby Brown, Kaia Gerber, and Finn Wolfhard, as their opportunities are being taken away because of other people’s actions. Now, they have to wait 2-3 more years until they are of the required age to be able to attend. Do you think it was necessary for the committe to restrict the rights of these upcoming stars in the making?  In my opinion, the Met Gala committee should not invite those who acted irresponsibly in order to teach them a lesson. It is amazing how one action can affect so many and not just the individual who did it. Especially with easy access to the media. One picture is all it takes to suddenly make the celebrity and event look bad. Looks like the these young stars will have to continue watching the fun from their Instagram feeds and T.V. like the rest of us.
